Waiakea’s Eric Cabais-Fernandez and Hawaii Prep’s Dean Connors both reached new heights to climb near the top of the state leaderboard Saturday during a BIIF track and field meet at Waiakea.
In the pole vault, Cabais-Fernandez cleared 14 feet, 7 inches for the first time, and the senior only trails Punahou’s J. Kai Yamafuji in Hawaii for the best effort this season.
Kai Yamafuji reached 15-1 last month after winning state gold last season with height of 14-4.
In the high jump, Connors also set a personal record by clearing 6-3.25, which is just three-quarters of an inch off the BIIF record. The sophomore is No. 2 in the state behind Saint Louis’ Korvin Feagins (6-7), the state runner-up last season as a junior.
Meanwhile, Konawaena’s Melina Ramirez, Kiyomi Watanabe, Jadyn Hanks and Caiya Hanks reeled off the second-fastest time in the state this season in the girls 4×100-meter relay, coming in at 50.88 seconds. Punahou ran 50.67 on Friday.
Kealakehe’s Crystal DeLos Santos, Kayli Gaspar, Gabrielle Yoshimura and Saidah Muhammad crossed in 51.44 on Saturday to rank No. 3 in the state. In the 4×400, the Wildcats’ Caiya Hanks, Danali Glenzel, Jayda Flenory and Jadyn Hanks lowered their 2019 BIIF-best time to 4:22.52.

• Kealakehe’s Elijah Kahele, Caden Young, Kainoa Raymond, and Calvin McHone-Todd ran a seasonal BIIF-best of 44. 33in the boys 4×100.
• Waiakea’s Abel Pacatang has been the best boys thrower all season, but Keaau’s Cody Ah Nee topped him in the shot put with a PR of 46-9.5. Pacatang PR’d in the discus, tossing 147-0.
• Kealakehe’s Leann Hamilton swept the three distance races. She won the 1,500 in 5:10.83, giving her the fastest BIIF time this season in all three events
• McHone-Todd added wins in the 100 and 200, and the other double winner was Keaau’s Sabina BooRivera (200, 400).
