Notes: Despite receiving a spark from senior quarterback Sean Schroeder last Saturday, Hawaii is one of 11 winless teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision and is trying to avoid its first 0-5 start since 1998. … Schroeder stepped in for starting quarterback Ikaika Woolsey and threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns as the Rainbow Warriors scored 34 unanswered points before losing to then-No. 25 Fresno State 42-37 at Aloha Stadium. … Wide receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann also provided a boost to an offense that ranks last in several Mountain West categories, catching three passes for 46 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown reception. Stutzmann, who has at least one catch in 24 straight games, missed the first three contests of the season after suffering an injury in a car accident. … The Spartans come in on a three-game losing streak — each defeat was by at least 19 points — and their only win of the season came in the opener against Sacramento State of the Football Championship Subdivision. … San Jose State quarterback David Fales ranks 11th nationally averaging 298.5 yards per game, and linebacker Kevin Smith leads the nation in tackles per game at 17.8. … Spartans kicker Austin Lopez had made a record-tying 23 field goals in a row to start his career before missing a second-quarter try last Saturday in a 40-12 loss at Utah State.

Notes: Winners of 11 in a row, the Rainbow Wahine head to Southern California for their first league road trip of the season. During back-to-back road matches last season against the 49ers and Anteaters, outside hitter Emily Hartong combined for 62 kills en route to being named the national Player of the Week. … This season, Hartong is first in the Big West and ranks 15th nationally with 4.49 kills per set. … Aided by freshman Nikki Taylor and her .329 attack percentage, UH is hitting a league-best .304. … While the Wahine hold a 26-15-1 lead in the series against Long Beach State, they’ve never lost in 29 matches against Irvine. Though the Anteaters took them to five at home last season… As expected, Hawaii dominated in two sweeps last weekend at home. It set a school record for fewest points (five) allowed in a set against Cal State Fullerton, and then it nearly matched another mark in losing only 35 points against Cal Riverside. Libero Ali Longo sparked the win against Fullerton, serving 20 straight points as the Wahine went on a 21-0 run in the second set.

Notes: With a 3-1 record away from home, UH has already matched its road win total from last season as it gets set to open Big West play on the mainland against the defending league champion. However, the Wahine didn’t win a league road match in 2012, finishing 0-4-1. … Hawaii forward Tiana Fujimoto is second in the league with six goals, including four game-winners, while freshman goalkeeper Monk Berger already owns four shutouts. … Fullerton swept the league’s weekly honors. Offensively, Erica Mazeau is first on the Titans with seven points, while goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic has a 0.71 goals against average. … The Highlanders have lost three straight, four of five and have yet to win at home.
