Fumio Yoshioka, 85, of Papaikou died July 11 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was the retired owner of Fumio Yoshioka General Contracting, previously employed by Isemoto Contracting and Katsumi Taniguchi Contracting and member of the Papaikou Hongwanji Mission. Visitation 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 14) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial service at 4:30 p.m. Casual attire. Survived by wife, Yoshiko Yoshioka of Papaikou; daughters, Phyllis (John) Schulte of Boise, Idaho, Merle (Stanley) Costales and Kathlene (Clayton) Nagata of Hilo; sons, Ryan (Pamela Jones) Yoshioka and Colin (Rosemary Inouye) Yoshioka of Hilo; sisters-in-law, Tamayo Yoshioka and Chieko Yoshioka of Papaikou; nine grandchildren a great-granddaughter and five hanai grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Gilbert Hinano Whitney, 77, of Virginia Beach, Va., died April 7 in Virginia Beach. Born in Keaukaha, he was a retired U.S. Navy veteran, retired postmaster for the Virginia Beach Post Office, member and volunteer at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach and fisherman. Visitation 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Puhi Bay Hale in Keaukaha. Memorial service and a potluck luncheon to follow. Casual attire; flowers and leis welcome. Hilo memorial services at a later date. Survived by wife, Mary (Fisher) Whitney; daughter, Candice Noelani Whitney; brothers, Lemona (Wilma Jeane) Whitney of Waikoloa and Delbert (Lillian) Whitney Sr. of Keaukaha; sister, Nani Whitney (Camacho) of Keaukaha; a granddaughter; nieces, nephews and cousins.
