Man sentenced for tax evasion
HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaii car dealer who agreed to testify about his father in a manslaughter case has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for tax evasion.
Alan Pflueger was sentenced Friday in federal court in Honolulu.
Pflueger pleaded guilty last year to filing a tax return with unreported income in 2005.
Pflueger is the son of James Pflueger, who took a plea deal earlier this year in a case involving the deaths of seven people on his property when a dam broke in 2006. James Pflueger pleaded no contest to reckless endangering charges in exchange for prosecutors dropping seven manslaughter counts.
More resources for immigrants
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii officials are celebrating the opening of state-funded immigrant resource centers.
The Office of Community Services on Thursday announced opening celebrations that will take place at four centers on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island. The office’s Executive Director Mila Kaahanui says restoration of state-funded, comprehensive services for Hawaii’s immigrant communities comes after two decades of gaps in services.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie says the centers will help immigrants achieve and maintain greater economic self-sufficiency and integration into Hawaii.
The Hilo celebration is scheduled for Oct. 24. Ewa Beach, Kalihi and Lihue celebrations will take place next month.
