In the past, allowing a late game-tying goal might have been too much for the University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s soccer team to overcome.
Moressa Lindsey, however, says the Lady Vulcans have learned to fight through adversity. So when Dominican sent Saturday’s match to overtime, the Vuls saw it as more of an opportunity as opposed to a nuisance.
And when Lindsey got a shot at the game-winner, she didn’t miss, giving the Vuls the golden goal for a 2-1 victory at UHH baseball field.
“(Dominican’s) goal was a mind-blower. We were like what just happened?” said Lindsey, who made the most of her first goal of the season in the 95th minute. “But our goal is to adapt, because we know things aren’t always going to go our way.”
Lately, in fact, things have been looking up for UHH (7-3-1, 5-3 Pacific West Conference), which has one four straight matches, each by a single goal.
“Every game it a different, but we just pull together,” Lindsey said. “We’re all family. If one person is hurt, we’re all hurt. If one person has success, we all have success.”
Kristine Pasek scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist by Lindsey Poulsen to put UHH ahead 1-0 in the 33rd minute. That lead held until Lauren Gollnick tied it for the Penguins (6-7-2, 3-5-1) with about 8:45 remaining in regulation.
Other than that, there were few scoring chances. UHH held a 3-2 advantage in shots, and neither goalkeeper was credited with a save.
UHH men 1, Dominican 0: Honokaa graduate David Robinson scored in the 63rd minute and the Vulcans came through with a strong defensive effort to end a six-match winless streak.
The Vulcans (4-6-1, 2-5-1) held the Penguins (4-9-2, 2-6-2) without a shot as goalkeeper Yonha Andrabi recorded one of the easier shutouts of his career.
The UHH men and women play at Hawaii Pacific University on Wednesday.
Volleyball
Kelli LeClair smacked 18 kills with 17 digs and first-place Point Loma won in three sets — 25-19, 25-17, 25-21 — at UHH Gym to hand the Vulcans their 10th loss in 11 matches.
Freshman Marley Strand-Nicolaisen compiled 14 kills and 13 digs, but UHH (6-10, 1-10 PacWest) hit just .133. Freshman Kyndra Trevino-Scott had eight kills but hit just. 100.
Heather Leavitt added 14 kills for the Sea Lions (18-4, 12-1), who hit .340 and never trailed during a set in the match.
The Vulcans host Dixie State at 7 p.m. Thursday.
