Lost hiker rescued on Captain’s Trail

Despite dense fog, a county helicopter was able to airlift a lost hiker who became disoriented on a heavily forested upper Puna trail to his car Sunday.

According to a Hawaii Fire Department statement, the hiker, an unidentified man, called 911 after becoming lost off the Captain’s Trail trailhead.

The man went hiking at about 10 a.m. and the alarm was sounded at 3:46 p.m.

The hiker was uninjured.

The Fire Department is reminding the public to familiarize themselves with terrain and weather conditions before hiking, and to have sufficient food, water, clothing and a fully charged cellphone before setting out on a backcountry hike.
