LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — The Kauai County Council will hold a special meeting this week to officially receive the mayor’s veto of a bill that would have regulated the use of pesticides and genetically modified crops by large agricultural business.
The six-member council will meet Thursday and possibly consider overriding the mayor’s decision.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. vetoed the bill last week, saying he agreed with its intent but found it legally flawed.
The council voted in favor of Bill 2491 on Oct. 16. Officials say if the council accepts the Carvalho’s veto, it would be allowed to try overturning it in a couple of weeks.
Kidnapper gets 10-year term
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — A Kauai man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a 2012 kidnapping.
The Kauai prosecuting attorney’s office announced Blaine Wailani Reyes’ sentence Friday. The 44-year-old Anahola man was convicted of kidnapping and robbery.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Arin says Reyes tracked down the victim at Safeway in Kapaa, held her hostage for about an hour and a half and repeatedly threatened her life. Arin says he forced the woman to withdraw $600 from an ATM.
Judge Randal Valenciano also ordered Reyes pay back the $600 in restitution and to have no contact with the victim. Reyes faces sentencing Tuesday for theft, credit card theft and fraudulent use of a credit card in a separate incident.
Soldier suspect in wife’s killing
HONOLULU (AP) — A man suspected of killing his wife from Singapore before trying to kill himself in the couple’s Honolulu apartment is a Camp Smith-based soldier.
The military said Friday that Leonardo Chavez is assigned to the Pacific Command’s Special Operations Command.
He is from the Dominican Republic and has been stationed at Camp Smith for the past 19 months.
Police believe Chavez fatally shot Tara Isnin last Monday before turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder and attempted suicide.
Isnin was considering divorcing Chavez, whom she had just married in August.
Chavez, who suffered a gunshot wound to his right cheek, was receiving treatment at a hospital. No charges have been filed.
