Church of the Holy Apostles, the Episcopal parish in Hilo, welcomes the community to its “Longest Night” service, also known as “Blue Christmas” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at 1407 Kapiolani St.
“The name of the service recognizes that Dec. 21 is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day, and the longest night of the year. It also recognizes that this season, full for many with holidays and rejoicing, can be hard for those who mourn and for those going through painful passages in their lives,” said the Rev. Moki Hino, rector of the Church of the Holy Apostles.
Hilo’s Church of the Holy Apostles is one of a growing number of congregations across the nation reaching out to those in the community who feel little comfort or joy during theholiday season.
“In this service we recognize that not everyone feels joyful at Christmas, and we honor the need in each of us to reach out and seek peace and comfort for our souls,” Hino said.
