Vegetable fermentation expert Ryan Peters, former owner of Cultured Foods Hawaii, will present a workshop on “Get Cultured: How to Make your own Kimchi and Sauerkraut for Fun and Better Health” from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, in Kainaliu. The class will be held at the Extension Service Office of the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at 79-7381 Mamalahoa Highway, across from the Aloha Theatre.
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 934-2700 to register. The cost is $49. Attendees need to bring two to four pounds of cabbage (head and/or Chinese), two 2-quart jars (you take home what you make), cutting board, mixing bowl and knife. All spices, seasonings and other veggies will be provided.

I invite you to take advantage of this great opportunity to spend the afternoon with one of the Big Island’s premier fermented vegetable experts,” said Carrie Kuwada Phipps, the new West Hawaii coordinator for Hawaii Community College’s Office of Continuing Education and Training.
“This is the first of many fun and functional programs for West Hawaii. Coming soon is an English as a Second Language course targeting our Marshallese community that will be offered in partnership with Hope Services Ulu Wini Transitional Housing,” she said. “I’m excited to plan programs for the upcoming year that will serve the continuing education and training needs of our West Hawaii residents.”
