Volcano Art Center Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Neo-Primitive painter, Christina Skaggs. Her solo show, “New Earth, New Art and The Color of Sacred”, runs from January 11th to February 23rd, 2014. The public is invited to an opening reception on Saturday January 11th, from 5-7 PM at the Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
“The ancient symbols referenced in my work are embedded in our DNA and this is why we see them as evocative and beautiful,” says Skaggs. “They are a silent prayer to the interconnectedness of all living things. I have carried these fragments in distant memories since childhood, and now they ascend to the surface and manifest in colors and textures. My visualization required me to create a unique process of mixing my own glazes from pigments derived from the earth since prehistoric times, along with precious metals, and even champagne (for its effervescence), which gives life to the innumerable transparent layers of colored glazes. You could call me an alchemist who was lucky to have been born in modern times— otherwise I’d have been burned at the stake” laughs Skaggs.
Recently, Skaggs was commissioned for a large custom painting for the penthouse suite at The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Her paintings can be found in the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua on Maui, the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and the In-Yo Cafe at Trump International Hotel &Tower, Waikiki among other stunning locations around the world. Volcano Art Center Gallery is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM and has represented the artists of Hawaii since 1974. Captions for 2 images: 300 DPI Christina Skaggs working in her upslope Hilo studio.
