The HHSAA released its 2021-22 state tournament schedule, but the return of sports is stopped at a red light for the moment.
The umbrella organization, which runs the state tournaments, is waiting for approval from all the main state players, the Department of Education and Department of Health, before anything can get started.
The HHSAA also has to wait until UH-Manoa releases its sports schedules to pencil in dates for the Stan Sheriff Center or Les Murakami Stadium to hold events.
As usual, the football season has the first targeted start date, July 19, with girls volleyball, cross-country, air riflery, bowling and cheerleading set to begin on Aug. 2.
The BIIF has not released its sports schedules yet, but the Big Island could be on tap to host three state tournaments: cross-country (Hawaii Prep), swimming and diving (Kamehameha), Division II baseball (TBA).
