HONOLULU (AP) — A new mobile application lets users search data for information about registered sex offenders in Hawaii.
The app released earlier this week allows users to search Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center’s database for names and information of covered offenders registered in the state. The app can locate residences and business addresses.
State Attorney General David Louie explains that “covered” offenders include those who use physical violence, prey on children and are repeat offenders. He says Hawaii Sex Offender Search will help the public access information about the presence of sex offenders in their communities.
The free mobile application can be downloaded for Apple and Android devices.
Man arrested in senior’s death
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — Authorities say a 41-year-old man traveling to the Philippines has been arrested on suspicion of killing an elderly man on Kauai.
Kauai police said Friday Giovani Corpuz was taken into custody earlier this week and is awaiting extradition in the homicide of 88-year-old Amby Cruz.
Firefighters responding to a medical call found Cruz unresponsive at his home on New Year’s Day. Police say an autopsy found he was shot once in the head.
Cruz was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Hiker dies after fall on Oahu
HONOLULU (AP) — Authorities say a hiker has died after falling about 50 feet on a hiking trail on the windward side of Oahu.
Officials say the hiker fell along the Olomana trail on Friday afternoon. Authorities say the man was in his 20s.
U.S. Attorney: $2.4M collected
HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Attorney’s office in Hawaii says it collected more than $2.4 million in civil and criminal actions for the 2013 fiscal year.
U.S. Attorney Florence Nakakuni announced Thursday $1.5 million was collected in criminal actions and about $930,000 was collected in civil actions.
Attorney General Eric Holder says the U.S. Department of Justice collected about $8.1 billion in civil and criminal actions in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. Nakakuni’s office touts recovering $450,000 from Wahiawa General Hospital to settle two lawsuits alleging improper billing. The hospital agreed to the settlement but didn’t admit liability.
