The Kamehameha-Hawaii girls soccer team didn’t mind being the underdog going into Monday’s match against visiting Division I Waiakea.
The private-school Warriors then went out and defeated the public-school Warriors 2-1 in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation match in Keaau.
Senior Harper Hottendorf scored both goals for D-II Kamehameha (4-3-1). The visiting Warriors fell to 5-1-1, with Cheylee Octavio scoring the visitors’ lone goal in the final 4:00 to deny the hosts a shutout.
In the boys match, Waiakea and Kamehameha battled to a 1-1 tie.
“It was a very hard fought game, and we rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie it up,” Kamehameha boys coach Mario Patino said.
Dyson Sato scored Waiakea’s goal. Koa Thompson scored the host Warriors’ goal.
Waiakea slipped to 6-2-1; Kamehameha, 3-2-5.
