Construction of electrical and telecommunication system upgrades are set to begin at Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School following the release Monday of $1.2 million in Capital Improvement Project funds by Gov. David Ige.
Ige also released an additional $300,000 that will be used to help bring the school into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
“Repairs to Waimea Middle School’s aging electrical and telecommunications systems and physical infrastructure are critical investments to support our keiki for years to come,” said Rep. David Tarnas, who represents North and South Kohala and North Kona.
The construction funds will be used for necessary upgrades to the school’s electrical, phone, bell, and/or alarm systems.
Waimea Middle School Principal Janice English emphasized the projects’ importance for school safety.
“We are thrilled that the Legislature secured needed CIP funding and the governor has now released the appropriation so the work can begin by the DOE,” she said in a statement.
