The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer — named in honor of the late U.S. senator from Hawaii and World War II Medal of Honor recipient — left General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, on Oct. 4. en route to its home port, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Oahu.
The ship is scheduled to arrive there Thursday morning and to be officially commissioned on Dec. 8, one day after the 80th Anniversary Pearl Harbor Remembrance Commemoration.
“Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are multi-mission ships able to hold targets on land, at sea, in the air, and under water at risk with a suite of sophisticated weapons and sensors,” according to a statement from U.S. Navy.
After it is commissioned, the USS Daniel Inouye will report to the commander of Destroyer Squadron 31.
