WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) — A new report says more than 210,500 gallons of wastewater spilled in Maui County in 2013.
The Maui News says the required report was done by the county Department of Environmental Management Wastewater Reclamation Division.
According to the report, there were a total of 18 spills last year. Nine of them were in Wailuku, eight were in Kihei and one was in Lahaina.
The largest spill involved more than 142,000 gallons of raw sewage at Kihei pump station No. 6 that occurred Nov. 18. The spill, which was attributed to a mechanical failure, reached storm drains but not the ocean.
The report stemmed from a 1999 consent decree related to the Clean Water Act.
The decree also requires the submission of quarterly reports to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Rock fall mitigation work performed at Hanauma Bay
HONOLULU (AP) — Rock fall mitigation work is being performed at Hanauma Bay.
The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation says about 200 bags of rock debris will be airlifted via helicopter to the preserve on Tuesday, when the east Oahu nature preserve is closed to the public.
The rocks are being airlifted from the top of the ridge to the upper parking lot area. Dump trucks will haul the rocks out of the preserve.
Hanauma Bay is scheduled to reopen Wednesday at 6 a.m.
