Hurricane Darby still in Eastern Pacific, but forecast track has it moving toward Hawaii

Forecasters continue to keep an eye on Hurricane Darby.

At 5 p.m. today, the compact but powerful Category-4 hurricane continued to move in Hawaii’s general direction, but was more than 1900 miles east-southeast of Hilo.

Darby is moving westward at about 17 mph with maximum sustained winds of about 140 mph and is expected to take a gradual turn to the west-northwest beginning Tuesday.

The storm is expected to enter the Central Pacific basin sometime Wednesday. It’s likely to change little in strength for the next day or so, but rapid weakening is expected after that.
