A “Mukashi” event at the Hawaii Japanese Center will feature vintage items for sale this Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
HJC is located at 751 Kanoelehua Ave. in Hilo.
Although closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, HJC continues to receive vintage treasures donated by Big Island families, including items intended for the center to sell in order to help cover its operating expenses.
Over the past several months, HJC volunteers have been carefully selecting and preparing items for this very special sale that includes ceramic ware (dishes, platters, tea sets, vases, sake sets); Japanese dolls; books and record albums; artwork and scrolls; beautiful kimono, yukata and obi; and much more.
Traditional Japanese children’s stories often begin with the phrase, “Mukashi, mukashi …” or “Once upon a time … .” In that vein, each item at this sale has its own story to tell — most likely made in Japan, but deeply rooted in generations of families here in Hawaii.
The public is invited. You never know what one-of-a-kind gems you might find, while helping the HJC continue its mission of honoring the immigrant heritage here in Hawaii.
