Police have charged a 55-year-old Waimea man with terroristic threatening after an incident Wednesday in Waimea that resulted in an area school going into lockdown.
Police have charged a 55-year-old Waimea man with terroristic threatening after an incident Wednesday in Waimea that resulted in an area school going into lockdown.
Police received a report shortly after noon of a man at a Waimea shopping center hitting a car with a hand tool, possibly a hatchet. Upon arrival roughly six minutes later, officers learned the man, later identified as Randy Russell Lloyd, had fled on foot.
Police checked Lloyd’s residence on Kaomoloa Place but didn’t find him there.
At 1:30 p.m., Lloyd’s girlfriend told police he was home and was smashing her car with an axe. By the time officers arrived there, Lloyd had again fled on foot. Officers initiated an extensive search of the area.
After Waimea Elementary School officials were informed of the search, the school went into lockdown at 1:51 p.m.
Lloyd was subsequently found and arrested at about 2:24 p.m. The school lifted the lockdown after learning the suspect was in custody.
Lloyd was charged later Wednesday with a single count of first-degree terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $10,000 and he was scheduled to make his initial court appearance today.
