Artist Dennis Leatherman will teach free drawing and watercolor sessions — with a special focus on depicting native birds and nature — in April and May at Wailoa Art & Cultural Center in Hilo.
The eight individual classes will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, starting April 8. Each class is limited to 12 persons. Sign up at 933-0416. The series is made possible with the collaboration of the Volcano Art Center through funding from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
“Each session designed to stand alone as a single class in drawing and painting, or can be taken as a series of all the sessions combined,” said Wailoa administrator Codie King.
Classes one, three, five and seven will be dedicated to drawing. Classes two, four and six will be on watercolor painting. The final class will be an introduction to post-art — matting, framing and the process of entering art shows.
“I’ll teach you how to observe life and see things in nature with more clarity. During these sessions, I will give you my insights into the field of nature art, my little tricks of the trade and the proper use of materials, equipment and technical suppliers,” said Leatherman.
“I will still teach the usual drawing lessons and watercolor lessons, but I want to take you away from the ‘flowers on the table’ art, to the world of nature and all its glory. Clouds, trees and people will become more interesting and part of your art. We will look at the action in everyday life.”
