Join award-winning artist Charlene Asato to explore Japanese book-binding techniques from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Niaulani Campus of the Volcano Art Center.
Learn three traditional styles: Yotsume Toji (four-hole binding), Kikko Toji (tortoise shell) and Koki Toji (noble binding).
“Explore other types of stab binding, as time allows,” said Asato. “These books are wonderful for albums, journals, one-of-a-kind books and scrapbooks.”
Tools to bring to the workshop include a gluestick, Exacto knife with fresh No. 11 blade, cutting mat, scissors, pencil, metal-edge ruler, bone folder and an old magazine or catalog for glueing.
Asato’s work has been included in juried shows locally and nationally. In 2012, she had a solo exhibition of books at the East Hawaii Cultural Center. She avidly pursues book arts, paper arts, photography, calligraphy and doll arts.
The workshop costs $46. Advance registration is required. Call VAC at 967-8222, or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.
