Besides a bit of windy weather, competition was in the air at Waikoloa Village.
It was really close in three of four events at a Big Island Interscholastic Federation golf meet Tuesday at the Robert Trend Jones Jr. designed course with the two medalists winning by a single shot.
Waiakea senior Andi Igawa fired a 5-over-par 77 to edge Hilo senior Amanda Loeffler by a stroke for the girls title in calm conditions with on-and-off showers. Both shot a 41 on the front nine; Igawa was a shot better with a 36 on the back nine.
The Vikings won the team title as Annie Sadamoto had an 89 and Kelsy Nishimura followed with a 93, good for a 260 stroke total, along with Loeffler’s second-place finish.
Waiakea was next with a 290 total and was followed by Kamehameha with a 310 total. Hilo has won two straight meets; Kamehameha seized the season-opener at Hilo Muni.
Igawa has pocketed three BIIF meets and Loeffler has finished second each time.
For the second straight time, Waiakea freshman Shon Katahira edged sophomore teammate Trevor Hirata for the boys title. Katahira went 36-37—73; Hirata was on his heels with a 2-over 38-36—74.
Hawaii Prep’s Luigi Balbo was third with a 76, followed by Kamehameha sophomore Preston Ching (76) and senior Cody Pereira (77).
Waiakea won the team title with a 318 stroke total; Chase Narimatsu carded an 85 and Brentson Kinoshita had an 86. Kamehameha was two strokes behind and in second at 320, followed by Makua Lani, 372; and St. Joseph, 506.
Hirata took the season-opener. Waiakea has won all three BIIF meets.
