Police say McElhaney was riding a blue 2022 Zhilong TSL motor scooter makai on Kaiminani Drive and lost control while turning left onto Kahilihili Street. He was first taken to Kona Community Hospital and was later transported to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died Friday, at 7:43 a.m.

Police don’t think speed or impairment are factors in the crash. McElhaney wasn’t wearing a helmet.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

McElhaney’s death is the 10th official traffic fatality this year compared to 20 at this time last year.

Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest and are asking potential witnesses to contact Officer Dayson Taniguchi at (808) 326-4646, ext. 229, or dayson.taniguchi@hawaiicounty.gov.

Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
