Divers recently got a new diving board at “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium in Hilo.
The new diving stand and board were installed with help from grants from the county Department of Parks and Recreation, Hilo HI-Diving and Engineering Partners, who collaborated to make the project happen.
The new board got plenty of use on a recent Friday afternoon as two divers from the Hilo HI-Diving club practiced with their coach, DJ Freedman.
“This new board is so nice. It’s stiff and helps me get a lot of air,” said Madison Chinen.
Chinen, 16, started diving two years ago after realizing she could mix her experience in gymnastics and swimming into one sport. She dives for Waiakea High School while in season and continues work on her skills off season.
The diving boards at Kawamoto can be used by the public as long as clubs are not in session. Those interested may have to pass a swim test facilitated by a lifeguard before entering the deep end.
Freedman is hosting free diving sessions from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Kawamoto this month.
