Dr. Jack Davis Brown, 81, of Pahoa died July 22 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Memphis, Tenn., he was a retired professor of French at the University of Mississippi, owner of The Garden Center in Oxford, Miss., member of Open Arms Metropolitan Community Church in Pahoa and active in culinary arts at Hawaii Community College and in the Hilo community. Celebration of life will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 10) at Church of the Holy Cross, 440 W. Lanikaula St. in Hilo. Scattering of ashes to follow. Casual attire; no flowers. Richard Alan Knox, 67, of Volcano died July 13 at home. Born in Pennsylvania, he was a landscaper and U.S. Marine Corps veterans. Private services held.
