Body found this morning in Wailoa River

Police are investigating a body that was discovered this morning on the edge of Wailoa River in Hilo.

According to a Hawaii Police Department, the body was reported in shallow water near Wailoa River’s makai side shortly after 9 a.m. today.

The corpse was recovered between the statue of Kamehameha the Great and the Hilo Iron Works Building, upstream from the Wailoa Small Boat Harbor.

The body was transported to the Hilo Medical Center and pronounced dead at 11:11 a.m.

Police do not currently suspect foul play in the matter, but an autopsy has been scheduled for early next week to determine cause of death. The police department’s Area I Criminal Investigation Section is continuing the investigation as a coroner’s inquest.

The body has been tentatively identified as a 64-year-old Hilo man, but positive identification is still pending and will be withheld until next-of-kin have been notified.
