Im finishes third, Vulcans place seventh at SMU Bishop Invitational

LACEY, Wash. — Junsu Im finished in a four-way tie for third place as the UH-Hilo Men’s Golf team got the 2023-24 season tee’d off with a seventh-place finish at the Saint Martin’s University Bishop Invitational at The Home Course.

The 2022-23 PacWest Conference Co-Champion and Freshman of the Year got his sophomore campaign off to a good start, finishing Round 1 tied atop the leaderboard at four strokes under before ultimately ending at minus-five. Im tallied seven of his 14 total birdies in the first round.

The Vulcans lineup featured three newcomers with freshman Dysen Park, junior-transfer Dylan Bercan and sophomore-transfer Jacob Torres, in addition to returning fifth-year senior Nicholas Gomez.

Sophomore Jordan Sato competed as an individual.

UH-Hilo finished even-par at the end of Round 1 at a tie for No. 2 but ultimately slid down to a seventh-place finish.

Simon Fraser finished at minus-four to take the top spot, highlighted by a 10-under team score for Round 2. The Vulcans will continue on in Washington with the Western Washington University Invitational next Monday and Tuesday in Bellingham. UH-Hilo will then close out the fall portion with three events on the Big Island in a tri-match with HPU and Chaminade (Oct. 14-15), the HPU Sharks Shootout (Oct. 23-24) and the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate (Oct. 27-28).
