Nake‘u Awai brings fashion and music to Waimea’s Kahilu Theatre with “The Egg and I” at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
This eccentric concert is fashion show and comic musical theatre, themed on Hawaii, centered on a legend of Akaka Falls and is a benefit for Kahilu’s education programs. It’s unlike any other fashion presentation, with wonderful stories set to favorite Hawaiian and Broadway songs.
Nake‘u has been coming to Waimea just before Easter for more than a decade to share his popular clothing designs and his creative, amusing view of the world that reflects his love of all things Hawaiian, and also the years he spent dancing on Broadway.
The show features Desiree Cruz as the kolohe diva, John Wray as the emcee, plus musical guests Alva Kamalani with Everett Knowles on piano, and the Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club Chorus.
A large community model cast will showcase Nake‘u’s designs and new fabrics. The models include Aloha Victor, Aulii Kirsch, Kauanoe Chang, Kimo Dupont, Liana Aviero, Paahana Roehrig, Pat Bergin, Peter Souza, Sharon Goodman, Margo Wray and Wally Wong.
Doors open at 11 a.m. with box lunch and preshow shopping — a wide range of Nake’u Awai beautiful shirts and muumuu will be on display.
The bar will be open, serving mimosas and wine. There is also a preshow egg decorating contest, with prizes for the trippiest, sweetest, most fashionable, best Waimea and Ka Lei Egg. Judges include Rowen Huff, Lance Duyao and Nake‘u.
In addition, Patti Cook will be honored for tireless service to arts in the community.
Tickets are $30, with option for box lunch at $15, and are available from the box office at www.kahilutheatre.org or by calling 885-6868.
