HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii football team will wrap up its month-long spring practice sessions Saturday with a fan-friendly “Spring Fling” at UH’s Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex field.
The festivities will begin at 1 p.m. with the coaching staff conducting games and a youth clinic, followed by Alumni flag football games at 2 p.m.
The Warriors will take the field at 3 p.m. for “pre-game” warm-ups, followed by the “Warrior Bowl” full-contact intrasquad scrimmage at 3:30 p.m.
Offensive line coach Chris Naeole and defensive line coach Lewis Powell will serve as the “head coaches” for the scrimmage.
The Warrior Bowl counts as the last of 15 practice sessions the team has held in accordance with NCAA limits.
Although head coach Norm Chow has not officially named sophomore Ikaika Woolsey as the starting quarterback, Woolsey reportedly has taken a significant amount of snaps with the first unit and has stood out among the candidates.
At halftime of the scrimmage, 12 Hawaiian Airlines inter-island tickets will be awarded to UH students — a Manoa Maniacs table will be set up inside the main entrance for students to sign up between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. for a chance to participate in the contest. The Manoa Maniacs also will be distributing various fan items at the table before the scrimmage.
Rainbowtique also will be selling balls, spirit items, jerseys and T-shirts throughout the afternoon.
The bleachers are limited to about 800 seats, so fans are encouraged to bring blankets, mats or beach chairs which will be allowed on the outlying grass areas. Due to ongoing construction, fans will not be allowed on the mauka side of the field.
Following the scrimmage, players will be available for autographs and photos on the field, so fans are encouraged to bring their cameras and items to be signed.
BASEBALL TEAM AT CAL STATE FULLERTON: The Rainbow Warriors baseball team returns to Big West Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton.
The series begins with a 4 p.m. (HST) game Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. game on Saturday and the finale at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
All three games will be nationally televised, with Friday’s game on ESPN3 and Saturday’s and Sunday’s games on ESPNU. All three games also will be carried on radio by ESPN AM 1420.
UH (15-22 overall, 3-9 Big West) is coming off a 10-4 non-conference loss at USC on Tuesday. Junior second baseman Stephen Ventimilia went 4-for-5, setting a new career-high for hits, and junior center fielder Kaeo Aliviado went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in, extending his safely-on-base streak to 21 games.
The Rainbow Warriors are now tied with UC Davis for last place in the Big West.
Cal State Fullerton (18-16, 3-6) was picked as a preseason No. 1 team in the country by one publication but was on a five-game losing streak entering Wednesday’s non-conference game at Fresno State, including a three-game sweep loss at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last weekend.
SOFTBALL TEAM AT UC SANTA BARBARA: The Rainbow Wahine softball team hits the road this weekend for a three-game series at UC Santa Barbara.
The series begins with a doubleheader at 9 a.m. (HST) Saturday and concludes with a single game at 9 a.m. Sunday.
UH (19-22 overall, 4-8 Big West) is mired in a seven-game losing streak, including a three-game sweep at home at the hands of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Junior first baseman Leisha LiiLii went 4-for-7 in the series and continues to lead the team in batting at .393, with 12 home runs, 33 RBIs, 26 walks and 44 hits. She has hit safely in 16 of the past 17 games and has reached base safely in all 17. Carlos, a sophomore right fielder, is batting .333 and leads the team with nine doubles and 30 runs scored.
UC Santa Barbara is 28-17 overall and in second place in the Big West at 8-4.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO TEAM AT BIG WEST TOURNEY: The Rainbow Wahine water polo team will begin defense of its Big West Tournament championship starting Friday with a first-round match against UC Davis.
The match is set for 12:15 p.m. (HST) at Long Beach State.
UH is 17-9 overall and earned the tournament’s No. 3 seed with a 3-2 Big West record. UC Davis is 12-17 after going 0-5 in league play.
The Rainbow Wahine edged UC Davis, 5-4, in their Big West season finale on April 12.
