Vulcan soccer seasons end

The UH-Hilo men’s and women’s soccer teams played away against Chaminade on Sunday for their finals regular season matches — as the Vulcans’ men’s team won 2-0 and the women tied 2-2.

Neither UH-Hilo team were granted berths in the NCAA DII West Region Tournament, and thus end their seasons.

Back-to-back late-game scores by the Silverswords evened the match up to a draw as time expired between the No. 25 UH-Hilo Women’s Soccer team and Chaminade, 2-2, Sunday afternoon in Pacific West Conference action at the Saint Louis School Field to close the regular season.

Jazlynn Ellis put in two first-half goals to give the Vulcans a 2-0 lead down to the waning minutes of the match.

After UH-Hilo stood stout on a handful of defensive stops, Chaminade’s Savannah Breeze Miranda launched a shot from midfield and watched it one-hop over Vulcans goalkeeper Phoebe Barnes’ head and in the goal in the 84th minute.

With intensity picking up, the Vulcans again defended well against the Silverswords’ corner-kick opportunities before Kenna Kiefer connected on a header to tie the score in the 88th minute.

Chaminade finished with 13 corner kicks to UH-Hilo’s four. Both teams combined for 34 total shots as Barnes recorded seven saves.

The six teams that qualified for the West Region tournament are No. 1 Point Loma (12-3-1), No. 2 Seattle Pacific (12-3-5), No. 3 Cal State LA (9-2-8), No. 4 CUI (12-2-2), No. 5 Cal St. San Marcos (11-2-6) and No. 6 Simon Fraser (8-5-5).

The Vulcans end their season 10-2-3 overall and 6-2-2 in PacWest play.

Men’s soccer

For the third time in program history, the UH-Hilo Men’s Soccer team will finish with double-digit wins after blanking Chaminade, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Pacific West Conference action at the Saint Louis School Field.

The Vulcans finish the regular season at 10-6-0 overall with a 7-3-0 conference record, good for No. 3 in the league standings behind PacWest champion Point Loma (8-1-1) and runner-up Westmont (7-2-1).

“Start to finish, I think there was a lot of progression. We all improved and we all came together as a collective group. We had some hiccups but this group never gave up whether we won, loss tied, had a bad week or was rainy in Hilo,” Vulcans acting head coach Diego Marroquin said in a UH-Hilo press release. “Absolute big-time leadership — seniors, specifically. This staff made it easy for me.”

UH-Hilo got on the scoreboard in the ninth minute with Gabriel Gallardo taking advantage of an errant pass caused by Palli Ingvason and Aidan Santos. Gallardo charged past the defender and straight toward the Chaminade goalkeeper before sending the shot through for the score.

It was a windy afternoon with gusts swirling with the Vulcans’ attacking direction in the first half. Tom Vorkastner added another score in the 34th minute, capitalizing on a failed Chaminade clearout to send the ball right back toward the goal as it ricocheted off a defender and into the back of the net.

The Vulcans were credited with 13 shots in each half, totaling 18 shots on goal as Chaminade goalkeeper Brandon Yasue finished with 16 saves.

UH-Hilo’s Christian Souza recorded four saves for his fifth shutout of the season.

The Vulcans moved to 10-6-0 (7-3-0 PacWest). UH-Hilo Men’s Soccer finished the 2008 and 2009 seasons with double-digit wins.
