Dear readers,
Even though it’s been a huge pleasure writing for you, my local audience, I’ve decided that my last column would be the Mele Kalikimaka one that ran in December. That feels like a good stopping point, doncha tink?
Mahalo for following my musings on our rainy side of the island. I especially appreciated hearing from you in person, via phone and email.
Some of you even tried to text, but I‘m perhaps the only person on the planet who doesn’t text.
Nothing made me smile more than when you said, “My gramma really likes your column!” Or “My brother, who doesn’t like to read, reads you!” Or “You go, Tita!” It was all I needed to fire up my iPad to start the next story.
But even when you didn’t like what I wrote, I took your criticism and tried to look at the other side. That is, after all, what teaching and learning is all about, and this old lady is still learning.
Thank you for your encouragement and support, which is what kept me going these past four and a half years. Ey, good fun yeh? But it’s important to know when to call it a day.
What we cannot end, however, is our commitment to keeping Hilo and Hawaii Island the very special place we know it to be. There’s still a lot more work ahead of us, so keep me posted.
A hui hou,
Rochelle
