Ocean View woman dies after breaking up dog attack on goat

According to police, it doesn’t appear that injuries from breaking up the dog attack on the goat resulted in the death of Sommer Crivello.

Officers responded at 3:44 p.m. Tuesday to the 87-3400 block of Mamalahoa Highway in South Kona to a report of a dog bite.

Bystanders told police that after Crivello intervened, she fell unconscious and unresponsive to the ground.

Officers found Crivello in the yard, not breathing. Her only visible injuries were abrasions to her left hand, consistent with a dog bite.

Officers immediately began CPR until Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived. HFD continued CPR and transported Crivello to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Hawaii County Animal Control and Protection Agency also responded to the scene, securing the dog and removing it from the scene. The dog was reported to be Crivello’s family pet and wasn’t aggressive toward officers and others at the scene.

It is unclear at this time what caused Crivello’s death. A coroner’s inquest investigation has been opened, and an autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone with information relative to the investigation are asked to call the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
