Ty France hit a tiebreaking RBI single to cap a four-run ninth inning off Clay Holmes as the Seattle Mariners rallied for a 5-4 victory over the host New York Yankees on Monday night.
The Mariners stopped New York’s seven-game winning streak by scoring four times off Holmes (1-1), who blew his second save in 15 chances and surrendered earned runs for the first time this season.
With the Mariners trailing 4-1 with two on and one out in the ninth, Luke Raley, who had two of Seattle’s three hits off Yankees starter Marcus Stroman, hit an infield single to Gleyber Torres. Julio Rodriguez scored the Mariners’ second run on Torres’ throwing error, which also allowed Cal Raleigh to advance to third and Raley to take second.
Mitch Haniger followed with an RBI single, and Dominic Canzone hit a game-tying sacrifice fly. France followed by hitting a 2-0 sinker to right field for a 5-4 lead.
Eduard Bazardo (1-0) allowed an RBI single by Jon Berti that pushed New York’s lead to 4-1 in the eighth, but he earned the win as Seattle prevailed for the fifth time in its past eight games.
Andres Munoz stranded Juan Soto at first and retired Alex Verdugo on a groundout in the ninth for his ninth save.
Verdugo drove in the first three runs for the Yankees, who were 29-0 when leading after seven innings entering Monday. Verdugo hit a two-run double four batters into the bottom of the first and added an RBI single in the fifth off Seattle starter Logan Gilbert.
Stroman allowed a run in 7 1/3 innings, and Luke Weaver finished off the eighth before Holmes faltered. Stroman struck out six, walked one and exited to a nice ovation after allowing Canzone’s homer to end his night.
Gilbert allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings. He struck out one, walked one and avoided his third straight loss thanks to Seattle’s comeback.
The Yankees went ahead when Verdugo followed Aaron Judge’s long double to center field with a two-base hit down the right field line. After consecutive one-out singles by Soto and Judge, Verdugo smacked a single to center for a 3-0 lead in the fifth.
Seven-run inning propels Angels past Houston Astros
Nolan Schanuel and Logan O’Hoppe slugged three-run home runs as part of a seven-run fifth inning as the visiting Los Angeles Angels topped the Houston Astros 9-7 on Monday.
Schanuel, O’Hoppe and Jo Adell — who went back-to-back with O’Hoppe with two outs in the fifth — all homered on the first pitch as the Angels dramatically erased a five-run deficit against Astros starter Framber Valdez (3-2).
O’Hoppe and Adell had their fourth and ninth home runs, respectively.
Schanuel initiated the ambush with one out, driving a changeup 368 feet out to right field and plating Willie Calhoun and Zach Neto. Schanuel’s fifth homer of the season sliced the deficit to 6-4.
After consecutive two-out singles from Taylor Ward and Kevin Pillar, O’Hoppe launched his 416-foot shot to left. Adell then crushed the next pitch 387 feet to right for an 8-6 advantage.
O’Hoppe homered off a curveball while Adell smacked a sinker the opposite way to right. It was a sudden unraveling for Valdez, who entered the fifth with four hits allowed, all singles.
Valdez allowed two singles in the first and a subsequent sacrifice fly to Ward that gave the Angels a 1-0 lead.
Valdez surrendered six of his season-high 10 hits in the fifth. The Angels tagged him for eight runs, also a season high, and one walk over five innings.
Neto capped the homer barrage by leading off the sixth with a bomb off Astros reliever Rafael Montero. The Astros secured a 6-1 lead with a power surge of their own. Jose Altuve drilled a three-run home run, his ninth, off Angels starter Reid Detmers to cap a four-run second. Yainer Diaz singled home a run earlier in the frame.
With one out in the fourth, Diaz doubled and Mauricio Dubon followed with his second home run of the season, a 372-foot shot to left.
Detmers allowed six runs on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts over four innings. Jose Suarez (1-0) worked two hitless innings to earn the win. Carlos Estevez notched his seventh save despite allowing a run-scoring single to Kyle Tucker in the ninth.
Manny Machado helps Padres rally past Braves in Game 1
Manny Machado’s two-run double completed a four-run eighth inning and helped the visiting San Diego Padres overcome a five-run deficit to beat the Atlanta Braves 6-5 in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday.
Jake Cronenworth began the uprising with a two-run single, and Machado followed with a double that drove in the tying and go-ahead runs against reliever Joe Jimenez (1-1).
The Padres have won the first three games of the four-game series. Atlanta has lost four straight overall.
The winning pitcher was Jhony Brito (1-2). Jeremiah Estrada pitched a scoreless eighth and Robert Suarez worked a perfect ninth to earn his 13th save.
Neither starting pitcher received a decision. Atlanta’s Reynaldo Lopez pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. San Diego’s Dylan Cease lasted only four innings — his shortest outing of the season — and allowed five runs on a season-high nine hits to go along with three walks and five strikeouts.
Atlanta scored twice in the first, as Matt Olson and Michael Harris II had RBI singles.
