KAPAAU — In the 2023 season, Kohala football was competitive in its matchups, but ultimately could not secure a win. But head coach Earl Hoshida plans to change that in the new year.
Prior to the start of preseason practices, Hoshida organized a team-only meeting to go over the upcoming season’s goals. The message was simple: the group as a whole comes before individual success.
“I told them that team is more important than talent,” Hoshida told West Hawaii Today at Wednesday’s practice. “Everyone bringing those talents together as one is what we’re aiming for.”
The Cowboys will get their first opportunity to follow that mindset this Saturday at home, where they will open their season against Kalaheo in a non-conference matchup. Kohala will be starting a new quarterback this season — freshman standout Kaua Reyes. Thus far, Hoshida has liked what he’s seen from the youngster in camp.
“He’s picking it up really well — we’re excited,” he said.
Last year’s primary quarterback, senior Hezekiah Wilson, will be playing offense and defense this season — at receiver and defensive back. With the Cowboys being a smaller team in roster size, several starters will be playing both sides of the ball in 2024.
Tirus Perez, who was Kohala’s top pass catcher and returner a year ago, is back in the mix with the same roles this time around. The junior possesses speed and agility, which is the identity the Cowboys plan to play with over the next few months.
Hoshida is also excited about the internal growth from his returning players. In 2023, many of Kohala’s starters were underclassmen. With another year of experience under their belt, Hoshida is eager to see the jump the Cowboys can make.
“They’re definitely more confident, more mature and they get along a lot better,” he added. “Our unity in these practices has been great to see.”
Saturday’s bout with the Mustangs is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Kohala’s home field. See the paper next week for the results.
