The Hawaii Island Fentanyl Task Force, in collaboration with the Big Island Substance Abuse Council, invites the community to the 2nd Annual Walk to Prevent Addiction &Overdose.
This event will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the picturesque Lili‘uokalani Gardens in Hilo.
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, this year’s walk aims to bring even more awareness and support to those affected by addiction and drug overdose. Individuals silently battling addiction or anyone who knows someone struggling with substance use are encouraged to attend.
“Last year’s walk was a turning point for me,” said Maya, a recovery participant. “Seeing so many people come together to support each other was inspiring. The resources and encouragement I received that day have been crucial to my recovery.”
Participants of all ages are welcome, making this a family-friendly event.
The walk will feature free resources from local support organizations, free snacks for participants, and plenty of activities for children. It’s an opportunity to connect, learn and show solidarity with those affected by addiction and overdose.
Another participant from last year, Naomi, said: “I felt a sense of community and hope that I hadn’t experienced in a long time, since before I got addicted. It’s amazing how such an event can bring people together and make a real difference.”
“Seeing the smiles and feeling the support is knowing that we’ve made a positive impact in our community, and it’s incredibly fulfilling,” said Micah Alameda, one of the event organizers. “Moments like these remind me why it’s important to love and build up our community. Bringing people together for support and camaraderie is truly a rewarding experience.”
