The University of Hawaii at Hilo continues to lead in creating an inclusive campus environment and helping students succeed, placing it among the top universities in the nation in the latest U.S. News &World Report College Rankings.
Among the campuses of the University of Hawaii system, UH Hilo and UH Manoa are classified as national universities, recognized for their broad academic offerings and focus on research and graduate education. In contrast, UH West Oahu is categorized as a regional college, emphasizing undergraduate programs.
UH Hilo’s national university status highlights its comprehensive academic portfolio and impact on higher education in Hawaii and beyond, according to a press release.
Ranked as one of the most ethnically diverse universities in the country, UH Hilo earned a diversity index score of 0.76, just behind prestigious institutions like Stanford and Johns Hopkins (0.77). This underscores its dedication to fostering a welcoming environment for students of all backgrounds.
“Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths,” UH Hilo Chancellor Bonnie Irwin said in the press release, “Having students from such a wide range of backgrounds enhances the learning experience for everyone.”
In addition to its diversity, UH Hilo ranked No. 111 nationally (and first in the state) for social mobility, reflecting its success in helping students from underrepresented communities overcome barriers and achieve academic and career success. Its support for first-generation economically disadvantaged students reinforces its role in promoting upward mobility in Hawaii.

UH Hilo ranked No. 188 among top public universities, reaffirming its dedication to academic excellence.
Nationally recognized programs like the School of Nursing, College of Business and Economics, and Department of Psychology prepare graduates for key roles in healthcare and business, strengthening Hawaii’s workforce and driving economic growth.
