HILO — It was smooth sailing as usual for Kohala boys basketball during Monday’s game against the Vikings at Hilo High. The defending state champion Cowboys won 44-36, improving to 6-0 in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) and 8-5 overall.
Kohala’s 26-11 lead at halftime couldn’t be erased over the final 16 minutes by Hilo, and the Cowboys travelled home with another victory.
Cowboys guard Isaac Salvador-Libron, who averages 14.3 points per game, scored a game-high 21 points. His teammate, forward Jayden Hook, added 10. Royden Tabiolo scored six points.
The Vikings had no scorers in double figures, but Jason Birrueta scored nine points and Xarren Jose had eight. Teammate Shaystan Iyo additionally had seven points.
Winner of six straight, Kohala is averaging 63.3 points per game in the BIIF while allowing under 42 — which is near its conference averages from a year ago. The Cowboys will continue their season in Waimea against Hawaii Preparatory Academy on Thursday inside Castle Gymnasium. Junior varsity will tip off first at 5:30 p.m.
Hilo (3-8 overall, 2-4 BIIF) has lost six straight after starting 2024-25 at 3-2. The Vikings will aim to snap their losing streak against Christian Liberty Academy at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at home.

CLA 7
Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i boys basketball wrapped up its three-game homestand with an 83-7 beatdown of CLA on Monday night in Kea‘au.
The winning Warriors held the Canefire to scoreless quarters in the second and third, also going into halftime with a 55-3 lead. KSH had four double-digit scorers — Tyler Kaohu (13), Raider Dias-Varize (12), Kawohi Huihui (10) and Kiai Yasso (10 points). Laikuakea Kahana-Rowe and Justin Ondo also combined for 16. As a unit, the Warriors made 10 3-pointers.
Jeziah Mahaulu and Jermaine Cline were CLA’s only scorers — dropping four and three points, respectively.
With seven games remaining in the regular season, KSH (11-3 overall, 6-1 BIIF) is averaging nearly 67 points per game while allowing just under 40 in BIIF play. The Warriors will next face Kea‘au on Friday night inside Cougar Gym, with junior varsity tipping off first at 5:30 p.m.
CLA (1-5) will drive to Hilo High on Thursday to face the Vikings at 5:30 p.m.
HPA 77, Honoka‘a 60
HPA boys basketball’s 21-8 first quarter against the hosting Honoka‘a Dragons, setting the tone for the remainder of the night in the 77-60 Monday night victory.
Ka Makani forward Vander Eberhard, who averages 20.4 points per game, scored a team-high 26 points. Teammates Cam Root and Kingdon Simmons combined for 22. HPA averages 66.8 points and allows 38.4 in BIIF play.
Honoka‘a’s leading scorer at 22.8 points per game, guard Kukua Tagabi, scored a game-high 30 points. David Aiona and Raven Labrador combined for 16. The Dragons average nearly 70 points per game in league play.
HPA (10-5 overall, 4-1 BIIF) has won four in a row, and will look to keep it going against Kohala on Thursday in Waimea — continuing its six-game home slate.
The Dragons (7-6 overall, 7-2 BIIF) will also play the Cowboys next, but at 5 p.m. Saturday inside King Kamehameha Gymnasium. Junior varsity will play first.

Hilo girls soccer made quick work of their Monday road trip to Kealakekua to face Konawaena at Julian R. Yates Field. The Lady Vikings won 8-0.
Aneala Sibayan, Hilo’s leading scorer, notched a hat trick to lead both teams. Sibayan also recorded an assist. Teammates Sharlette Chartrand (one assist), Pukui Alameda, Sariah Kaapana-Suzui and Titahni Rupano-Parada-Kaawaloa (three assists) scored once apiece. Lindsey Hiraki and Teiya Santiago also had one assist each.
Hilo improved to 6-2-1 on the season, while the Lady Wildcats fell to 1-7-1. The Lady Vikings will return to the pitch against Ka‘u at 3 p.m. Thursday in Pahala, while Kona will host Kealakehe at 7 p.m. Thursday at Julian R. Yates Field.
KSH 9, Ka‘u 0
KSH girls soccer recorded its eighth straight win and eighth straight shutout in Monday’s 9-0 win over Ka‘u in Pahala. The Lady Warriors moved to 8-1-1 on the season.
Aisyss Respicio-Ragocos was the afternoon’s leading scorer with two goals, while teammates Rhacelyn Respicio, Mikaila Aina, Kiari-Lynne Andrade-Aiona Aka, Kealani Weddle, Madisyn Meyers, Lily Kay-Wong and Liliana Chandler scored one each.
Remaining one of the isle’s top teams. KSH has out-scored opponents 57-3 this season. The Lady Warriors’ next matchup is to be announced.
The Lady Trojans (0-8-0) play HPA at 3 p.m. this afternoon in Waimea.

Honoka‘a 0
After dropping the previous two matches, HPA girls soccer rebounded with a 4-0 blanking of Honoka‘a on Monday in Honoka‘a town. Goalie Reece Lustik recorded the shoutout at the net.
Madie Buczyna, Nina Cipriano, Jade Fitz-Gerald and Kekai Lansdale scored one goal each. Ka Makani improved to 5-4-0 on the year. The Lady Dragons fell to 1-6-1.
Next up, HPA will face Ka‘u at 3 p.m. today on its own pitch. Honoka‘a’s next match is to be announced.
