Wailoa Center will present the fifth biennial Abstract Only Juried Exhibit from Aug. 1-28.
The idea for this biennial exhibit came from the desire to challenge and inspire artists to pursue new directions they might not normally explore. Artists from the Big Island look forward to this exclusively abstract exhibit every other year with great anticipation.
This year, the juror who will pick the entries for display is artist Kaori Ukaji. Ukaji was born in Tokyo.
She has been a graphic designer, teaching at Musashino Art University in Japan and moved to Hilo in 1994. She also has exhibited her art in Taiwan, Japan, Australia, Hawaii and New York. Currently, she teaches at Hawaii Community College.
“In general, I see artwork from my intuition without any logical context or words. If I could expand the concept of intuition with words, I would add the qualities of intenseness, finishness and beauty. There needs to be a certain level of achievement. I would say that the artist needs to come from a non-judgmental place described by William DeKooning as the ‘freedom of indifference.’ If a piece has these powers, it touches my inner feeling,” Ukaji said.
Up to three entries per artist will be accepted 10 a.m.-3 p.m. July 26.
Artwork in any medium, created in the past two years and has not been exhibited in any previous juried exhibits are eligible to enter. Artwork must be framed and ready to hang or easily installed.
First- and second-place awards, honorable mention and people’s choice awards are being planned.
