HONOLULU (AP) — The Honolulu Zoo is mourning the loss of one its hippopotamuses.
The mayor’s office said a female hippo named Rosey was found dead at the zoo Friday morning. A necropsy is scheduled for this week to determine the cause of death.
She was 25 years old.
Rosey’s death leaves the zoo in Waikiki with just one hippopotamus.
The hippo exhibit will be closed indefinitely while Rosey’s 3,000-pound body is removed and while zoologists monitor and comfort the remaining female hippopotamus.
City spokesman Jesse Broder Van Dyke said officials are looking at the possibility of either getting another hippo or transferring the remaining one to the mainland to ensure she has companionship.
If she does go to the mainland, the zoo will pursue getting two new young hippos for the exhibit.
