Wailoa Arts & Cultural Center’s August exhibit of the 4th biennial Abstract Only Juried Competition came to a close with the People’s Choice Award voting tallying overwhelmingly for No. 90, titled “LP,” a black-and-white photograph with three-dimensional elements of black spiked wood protruding from the surface, by artist Bob Douglas.
This year’s abstract show attracted over 1,000 visitors viewing 98 works of art created by 54 artists. Juror Kevin Diminyatz was challenged to select the overall winners, who were announced at the beginning of the exhibit.
Monetary awards were given for first place, “MT #46,” a monoprint by Mike Marshall; second place, “Jagged Edge,” a paper construction by Charlene Asato; third place, “Candlelight,” a pastel by Sandy Wallis; fourth place, “My Environment Influence III & IV,” an ink and colored pencil drawing by Rebecca Rosen Charon, and honorable mentions, including works by Sarah Taylor Ko, Michael Poore, Michael Shewmaker, Chantelle Lucas and Chris Butcher.
Wailoa Art & Cultural Center is administered by the Division of State Parks, Department of Land and Natural Resources. It is free and opened to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Wednesday from noon-4:30 p.m. The center is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and state holidays.
