“Three Cornered Moon,” a play by Gertrude Tonkonogy, was presented by the Hilo Community Players last evening at the Mamo theater as a benefit performance for the Hilo Kindergarten Association, which is opening a new kindergarten Sept. 5 at the Hilo Boarding School. The play was excellently presented by the entire cast, which is a credit to Valerie Anderson, an accomplished actress in her own right, who directed the show. Acting laurels for the evening were divided between Lu Pence and Patricia Stayton, both of whom were outstanding in their performances. Mrs. Pence proved a real character actress by taking on a difficult role with much ease and versatility. She was the fluttering Billie Burke type, using her expressive hands to advantage. Most of the comedy lines in the play were spoken by her. Miss Stayton, on the other hand, played a straight role — of a young girl who wakes up from her dreamy moods and discontented life to the realities of living and loving. …
The five men in the play, namely George Inskip, Robert Trent, Warren Flagg, Maury Williams and William Mottz, were excellent in the portrayals of their respective roles. Mr. Williams looked and lived the part of a dreamy, sensitive artist who was oblivious to all the noise and rumpus in the Rimplegar household. Jenny the maid, played by Judy Spalding, was one of the highlights of the play, and each time she appeared on the stage she was greeted with laughter. Throwing aside all thoughts of beauty, Miss Spalding turned into a comic character for the sake of art. Pauline Wessel was the flapperish Kitty in a fetching black frock with red accessories.
Assisting Mrs. Anderson in presenting the play were: Edward Hallor, production manager; Tyler Harr, Mrs. D. Trent and Phil Brown, scenery and properties; Willard Porter, stage manager; and Mrs. Robert Lindsay, president of the Community Players. Mrs. Lorno Desha is president and Mrs. Gardner Richardson is secretary of the Hilo Kindergarten Association.

The Board of Supervisors was to get its first look at plans for the controversial new county building today. Representatives of the Honolulu architectural firm of Wilson and Associates Inc. were to unveil at today’s board meeting schematic drawings for the $1.5 million structure to be built in the re-use area of Project Kaiko‘o. Once the board has approved the preliminary plans, the architects will proceed with detailed renderings and models. The county is paying Wilson and Associates $93,919 for the plans.
The building will be constructed on a 4-acre site in Increment 1 of the Kaiko‘o commercial area. Site preparation started last month and it was estimated construction could begin by late next spring. The site of the proposed building was switched in Kaiko‘o from the State Tree Nursery more than a year ago after Big Island legislators sponsored a concurrent resolution asking the board to re-examine the site question.
