HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s Department of Transportation must pay $1.2 million for stormwater violations at Honolulu and Kalaeloa harbors.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Health announced Wednesday the Department of Transportation must also implement actions to improve management of stormwater runoff at the two harbors.
The settlement is part of an agreement the department reached with the EPA, the U.S. Department of Justice and the state Department of Health.
Inspections in 2008 identified stormwater violations of the Clean Water Act. EPA spokesman Dean Higuchi says the violations included failure to prevent pollutants from mixing with stormwater runoff at harbor facilities.
The department didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
The state Health Department notes stormwater contamination is the biggest source of water pollution in the islands.
