Idiotic decision
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the headline in the Sunday edition (though 22 years of subscribing to the paper should make me immune).
With all the anxiety over the threatening lava flow in Puna, what idiot decided to throw gasoline on the fire with a story about a theoretical eruption on Mauna Loa?

Human nature
Why are we endlessly having disagreements, conflicts and wars?
It is because there is an element of greed, anger and hate lurking within the souls of all human beings (however, it could be more pronounced in some cases!).
Religion teaches us that we should all learn to suppress those “three evil traits” so that we might be able to live in peace, harmony and gratitude!

This is in response to your Sept. 14 headline that new state Department of Health proposed rules regarding cesspool upgrades would raise home prices.
This is a very narrow perspective by Realtors only seeking immediate sales. In the long-term, the improved environmental impacts and the perception by buyers that they are purchasing a more quality dwelling largely offsets the cost of these improvements.
I am pleased that the state Department of Health is proposing to follow the lead of the Kapoho community in requiring that homes be upgraded to current wastewater standards for new construction. Here, we require upgrades for people who want to newly receive water from our water system (Kapoho Kai Water Association).
This happens when properties change ownership, service is restored after a shutoff, someone switches from catchment, or when a new residence is constructed.
Others have upgraded voluntarily, recognizing their responsibilities as community members. This has resulted in a substantial number of people upgrading — mostly near the ocean, where cesspools were directly injecting toilet contents into the groundwater/brackish water ponds.
The Department of Health will further our efforts by requiring these upgrades, whether or not a house has catchment or not, and our board appreciates it. Mahalo, Department of Health!
