During the week of Sept. 29-Oct. 4, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21. The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Kona, 8; Puna, 5; Hamakua, Ka‘u and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 891 DUI arrests compared to 996 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.5 percent.
There have been 1,180 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,059 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to 23 during the same period last year, a decrease of 60.9 percent. To date, six of those have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and another three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
