Hawaii County’s Department of Environmental Management began removing structures from the Pahoa Transfer Station on Friday morning in anticipation of the encroachment of the June 27 lava flow.
The county plans to keep the station open to area residents until the end of business Friday, at 6 p.m., according to county spokesman Kevin Dayton.
On Friday around 10 a.m., the large bamboo and canvas canopy that covers the reuse station at the facility was loaded onto the back of a truck and taken through the center of Pahoa Town to its new location.
Recycling services were set to close at noon Friday to allow time for the movement of equipment.
The temporary site for the new station is set to be on Kauhale Road near the Pahoa Neighborhood Facility. The new station will open for business at 6 a.m. Saturday.
