HONOLULU (AP) — Construction of a guideway overpass for the Honolulu rail transit system will require partial closures on the H-1 freeway over about a year starting after the Thanksgiving weekend, officials said.
Up to four lanes of the freeway near Leeward Community College will be closed during late night and early morning hours for days at a time, rail authorities announced Tuesday.
The closures will last from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
Daniel Grabauskas, executive director of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation, asked drivers to use caution around work crews.
“The message here today is safety,” Grabauskas said at a news conference.
The 20-mile rail line from Kapolei to Ala Moana Center is expected to be completed in summer 2019, said Lorenzo Garrido, director of engineering and construction.
The guideway near the college is just one construction area, he said.
Lane closures have begun in Ewa and Waipahu as rail line segments are prepared for construction. Farrington Highway between Kualakai Parkway and Old Fort Weaver Road Loop is closed through January.
Precast guideway segments have been transported to West Oahu sites. Columns and other support structures will be built for the rail line overpass near Leeward Community College.
Building the guideway on-site near the college is expected to reduce the impact on traffic, said HART spokesman Scott Ishikawa.
Officials will initially close two southbound lanes on H-2 near the H-1 merge for a couple of weeks in December. The two lanes will already be closed because of work on guideway piers, Ishikawa said.
Westbound lane closures are expected to start next year.
