HONOLULU (AP) — Iolani Palace has installed new glass in a front door to replace a 130-year-old crystal pane broken during a break-in last year.
Palace Curator Heather Diamond said the palace used custom-made German glass for the recreation. It’s made to look like 19th Century glass.
The repairs cost $11,500 and are being paid for by a donation.
The original glass was ordered in England, etched in San Francisco and installed in time for the 1882 grand opening of the palace under King David Kalakaua.
In November, a Honolulu woman was sentenced to a year in prison for kicking in the palace’s front door and breaking the glass.
