Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole headlines OLA! Makalii, a 20-year concert celebration of the double-hulled Polynesian voyaging canoe, at 7 p.m. Saturday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea.
The eldest child of Kekuhi Keali‘ikanaka‘oleohaililani and the eldest grandchild of Pua Kanaka‘ole Kanahele, Kaumakaiwa is a five-time Na Hoku Hanohano award winner. Kaumakaiwa’s voice personifies depth and wisdom of family, environment and ancient spirit, while sparking a cadence and standard for the next generation of Native Hawaiian musicians today. Gentle ballads, sultry jazz tunes, energetic Hawaiian lyrics and contemporary compositions, the vocal stylings of Kaumakaiwa will embrace you to the core, allowing words and music to saturate the senses.
The concert honors people from all walks of life who came together to instigate the re-birth of the practice, functionality and traditions of Holo Moana.
Birthed through the portal of Lononuiakea, Makalii, the double-hulled voyaging canoe born in Waimea, presents a platform for the community to practice its traditional lifestyles in a synergetic way. During the past 20 years, Makalii has served as a floating classroom, engaging people of all ages in the community to delve into the traditions of culture from the deck of a canoe.
