Waiakea’s three promising freshmen, Kaelyn Uchida, Anne Nakamoto and Kaley Saludares finished 1-2-3 at a BIIF golf meet on Wednesday at Mauna Lani’s North Course.
It’s the second time the Warrior trio has placed in the top three. They did so at the season-opener at Hilo Muni, with Saludares second and Nakamoto third.
In changing conditions over in West Hawaii — sunny and hot early on, and cloudy and cool later in the day — Uchida won medalist honors with an 8-over-par 80.
Right behind were Nakamoto at 81 and Saludares at 82, wrapping up the BIIF team title for Waiakea, which has won 10 of the last 11 crowns. (Hilo took it last year.)
That achievement was matched by Waiakea sophomore Shon Katahira, who fired a 4-under 68 to take medalist honors to beat teammate Trevor Hirata, who had a 72.
The Waiakea boys are also undefeated, going 5 for 5 in BIIF meets.
Keaau sophomore Zack Dorn finished second-to-last with a 134. He’s a novice, so his high scores are not unusual.
What’s really eye-catching was his improvement. He shot a 77 on the front nine, and closed with a 57 on the back, a 20-shot difference — by far the biggest jump of the day.
The next meet is Tuesday, April 21 at Kohananiki Golf Club. Then it’s the three-round BIIF championships, starting Sunday, April 26 at Hualalai Resort.
