Kilauea lava lake now visible

A portion of Kilauea’s lava lake remains visible this morning from the Jaggar Museum after coming into view Thursday afternoon.

The lake was about 52 feet from the rim of the Overlook crater as of 7:30 a.m. and continues to rise, said Janet Babb, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory spokeswoman.

That’s its highest point since the summit eruption began in March 2008.

Babb said it’s unclear how high the lake might climb or if it will spill out onto the floor of Halemaumau.

The museum is located on the edge of Kilauea’s caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
